A bit more about Netanya

Thanks to my wonderful friend Melissa, I have a computer to use this week, so I'll try to get this blog caught up!

The way down to the beach

Our beach!

We live in downtown Netanya, situated north of Tel Aviv, along the Mediterranean coast. Our apartment is a ten minute walk from a gorgeous beach. The beach and the promenade running along the cliffs overlooking the beach are beautiful places to run. The water here is warm and fantastic for swimming. Our apartments are pretty basic, but the location is great.

During the first week, the apartments on our floor flooded... a few times. We armed ourselves with shower squeegies and created an assembly line to push the water down the hall. This effort quickly degenerated into a game of squeegy hockey.

This is the best Hummus in downtown Netanya-- Uzi's Hummus. To the right is Uzi, making the Hummus by hand. The final product is creamy and smothered with beans, boiled eggs, olive oil, and spices.

On the way to the beach is a large square surrounded by restaurants and shops. On Thursday and Saturday evenings especially, it's hopping with activity. We caught a group of Capoeira students and instructors performing in the square accompanied by drums and song.

Also in the square, a small tent city stood for the first month of the program. Like the rest of the tent cities in Israel, erected to protest the high cost of living here, it was recently taken down by the protesters living there.
